First and foremost, action figures today would not be where they are without Todd McFarlane. In 1994 he created his own company to produce the type of action figures he wanted to see. It took decades for the other companies to catch up. Why? Because they failed to realize that there was a whole market of buyers that grew up with action figures and wanted something a little bit more than 5 points of articulation. Now it seems hard to believe that, McFarlane Toys, has been in business for over 20 years. AFJ decided to look back at their flagship character and the toys that he spawned. We decided to go with the 10 weirdest toys in the line over a "10 best". That list alone is going to take some time to calculate. #AFJ4LIFE
Kudos to McFarlane Toys for keeping a stunning record of all their releases. If only every company was this thorough with their products. See the full catalog HERE!
SUPERPATRIOT
![]()
Brand: Spawn
Genre: Comics
Series: Spawn Series 6
Release: August 1996
AFJ's Take: If you are wondering who this, well he is a character, created by Erik Larsen, who had his own comic at Image, and originally appeared in Savage Dragon. Yep, not even a Spawn figure, however, he was made into a figure and placed into the Spawn action figure line. I remember seeing this guy on the pegs at Suncoast Video and wondering, who is that?
EXO- SKELETON SPAWN
![]()
Brand: Spawn
Genre: Comics
Series: Spawn Series 4
Release: January 1996
AFJ's Take: All right, this one is not just an EXO-Suit but a figure and an EXO-suit together. Yes, you got both. We found it weird because they actually did come together. The selling point would have been Spawn, not the crazy set of bone armor.
JASON WYNN
![]()
Brand: Spawn
Genre: Movies & TV
Series: Spawn the Movie
Release: July 1997
AFJ's Take: Yes, the Spawn movie was terrible. However, the figures were pretty great. This figure of Martin Sheen is just weird altogether and was a peg warmer for years. To this day no one wants Charlie's Dad. You'll find one at the toy shows, easy. Just look in the two-for-one bins.
SABRE
![]()
Brand: Spawn
Genre: Comics
Series: Spawn Series 8
Release: June 1997
AFJ's Take: A hero in the world of Spawn with very little background information. Hey, if you ever wanted a highly articulated and sculpted buffalo warrior toy, Todd made one!
CRUTCH
![]()
Brand: Spawn
Genre: Comics
Series: Spawn Series 7
Release: February 1997
AFJ's Take: I seriously have no idea who this in the comic. I can tell you this was the one figure that stared me for months while I worked at Suncoast Video. No one wanted him, no matter how low we marked him down. I feel bad for your Crutch, you didn't ask to come into this world, yet you exist.
NO-BODY
![]()
Brand: Spawn
Genre: Comics
Series: Spawn Series 7
Release: February 1997
AFJ's Take: Twisted and fun, No-Body is like th realistic, no cartoon version of the TMNT's Krang. I can see someone buying this for a kid and saying, "You like action figures, right? Well, have fun!".
RE-ANIMATED SPAWN
![]()
Brand: Spawn
Genre: Comics
Series: Spawn Series 12
Release: September 1998
AFJ's Take: This is a great foreshadowing of things to come in McFarlane's toy line. Twisted, freaky, and completely right out of your nightmares. It was weird guys like this got McFarlane Toys on the list of so many parent watch groups.
IRON EXPRESS
![IRON EXPRESS, Spawn, McFarlane Toys,]()
Brand: Spawn
Genre: Comics
Series: Spawn Series 15
Release: October 1999
AFJ's Take: This figure is part of the Techno line of Spawn figures. I think it is a cybernetic killer turkey. Yet, all I can really see is how often I could poke m yself in eye.
WARZONE
![]()
Brand: Spawn
Genre: Comics
Series: Spawn Series 15
Release: October 1999
AFJ's Take: Oh yeah, a cybernetic killer boar. Things were weird in 1999. We all thought that are toasters were going to kill us at the stroke of midnight December 31st. A cybernetic boar was pretty much the norm back in those days.
GRAY THUNDER
![]()
Brand: Spawn
Genre: Comics
Series: Spawn Series 15
Release: October 1999
AFJ's Take: Next to Warzone and Iron Express, Gray Thunder suddenly doesn't seem so weird. However for the purposes of our"10 Weirdest Spawn Action Figures," he falls right in line.
